Outlook
After the Hawks finished last year 21-17, four of those wins at the expense of Washington Post top twenty ranked (National Christian, Gwynn Park, Hylton and DCIAA champs Ballou High School), Hawk fans will be looking for third year Head coach Levet Brown to continue to build the Hawks into a program that consistently wins and advances in the NACA national post season tournament. This season the team will feature five lettering players and three newcomers. All of these players will compete for starting positions and playing time. Coach Brown feels that this constant competition for minutes throughout the season will keep the team sharp and poised for success.
Last year the Hawks proved that they could play with any team in the Metro area by taking preseason Top Ten nationally ranked
We will be an up-tempo team again this season, ”Coach Brown said. “Our team will run a lot, perhaps, even more than last year’s team, but I think we can have even more success this season as we have more depth and experience. With a deeper team this year we will be better prepared for our competitive schedule.
Senior Jonathan Arledge returns for his final season with the Hawks. The 6-foot-9 inch power forward will be expected to lead the team and provide experience. Arledge is joined by returnees senior guard Jada Johnson. Also returning to the lineup are senior guard Phillip “Noodles” Harrington, senior shooting guard Vincent Roux Jr., senior guard Lamont Macey Jr. and junior guard Devin Martin. All of which had a great summer.
We are trying to bring in the right type of student-athletes to
Junior forward Juwan Newman and Senior power forward Eugene McCrory bring big man presence and experience to the hawk’s frontcourt.
In addition point guard Kareem Storey will make an immediate impact in the backcourt.
THE BACKCOURT
The Hawk backcourt will be loaded with depth in 2009-10. With five veterans and one newcomer, Head Coach Levet Brown will have plenty of options in the backcourt.
Jada Johnson is the most experience of the guards. He is an excellent athlete who provides poise and leadership at the point guard position. The 6’3 guard has played in 40 games at Kima. Jada has the ability to be one of the best guards in the Metro area.
Vince Roux Jr. is the second returnee to the Hawk backcourt. He is a great shooter and athlete that can run the floor well. The 6’2 shooting guard has played in 40 games for the Hawks. When he gets hot from the field, Roux can score points quickly.
Phillip “Noodles Harrington” is the third returnee to the Hawk backcourt. He is a great defender that brings a lot of energy to the team. The 6’2 guard has played in 72 games for the Hawks. He brings toughness to the Hawk defense. Harrington has the ability to be one of the best defensive guards in the Metro area.
Lamont Macey Jr. is the fourth returnee to the Hawk backcourt. Macey can do it all said Coach Brown. “Macey defends, scores and handles the ball well. He is 6’3 and can guard any player on the opponent’s team.
Devin Martin is the fifth returnee to the Hawk backcourt. He is a talented player, who also can play on the wing. Martin is the best rebounding guard in the Metro area. The 6-foot-3-inch guard worked hard this spring and summer to improve his game. He attended the prestigious Top 100 Capitol Hoops camp with some of the top players in the Metro area. Martin was named co-mvp of the camp.
Coach Brown is confident that the lone newcomer in the backcourt will be a vital part of the team.
Kareem Storey is a 5’9 Junior will bring quickness and shooting ability to the point guard position. He has good quickness that allows him to get to the rim and lead an up-tempo offense. He also had a great summer in leading the Hawks to championship games at the prestigious Summer Rock League and DC Board games.
The Frontcourt
The Hawk frontcourt should have plenty of talent and toughness this season. The big men should develop throughout 2009-10 and they should feature the speed and athleticism needed to run the Hawk up-tempo offense.
Jonathan Arledge is one of the most experienced power forwards in the Metro area, having started 72 games of the 72 games he has played at Kima. He enters his final season at Kima after finishing second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.7 points per game last season. He led the team in rebounding (10.1) and block shots (3.0) per game. Arledge has also been nominated for McDonalds All American. He received All Met honors last season. Arledge has already committed to George Mason.
Eugene McCrory is a welcome surprise for the Hawks. He will bring a physical presence to the Hawk frontcourt and will provide the size and toughness needed to rebound and finish around the basket.
Juwan Newman is a very athletic player who alters shots and runs the floor well. He can also run the floor and knock down mid range jump shots at the forward position. Juwan Newman at 6’8 can become a great player with hard work. The Hawks are expecting a lot out of Newman this season.
Overview
Kima fans should be excited to watch a high-tempo style of basketball again this season. The Hawks will continue to run the spread offense and will put pressure on opposing teams all year long with their physical, pressure defense. The veterans now have a full year of experience playing for Coach Brown and will help instill the team’s system with the squad’s newcomers.
The Hawks will feature a backcourt comprised of skilled veterans and promising newcomer Kareem Storey. Guard Jada Johnson will provide leadership and will help run the team’s offense with his passing ability and excellent court awareness. Seniors Harrington and Macey will be counted on to serve as the defensive leaders of the Hawks. Martin and Roux provide the instant scoring that the Hawks will need.
A key to Kima’s season will be the play of Jonathan Arledge. He will look to build on his breakout season and become a consistent scorer both at the power forward and wing position, while sophomores Adrian Rousseau, Tre Roper and Freshman Brandon Franklin will add depth in the front and backcourt and compete for minutes throughout the season.
The frontcourt will benefit from the additions of Eugene McCrory and Juwan Newman. They will bring a physical presence to the Kima frontcourt and will provide size and toughness needed to rebound and finish around the basket.
Last season, the Hawks won 21 games, defeated four teams in the Washington Post top twenty. Although the Hawks will feature a team loaded with new faces this season. Kima fans are excited about the future of the program. If Coach Brown belief that the team has the chance to be better in almost all areas of the game in 2009-10 comes to fruition, it will be an exciting season in Kimatown.
